The Faculty of Law and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law invite you to attend a free public lecture on Residential Tenants’ Rights. Alberta’s Residential Tenancies Act has never been particularly friendly to renters. Unlike other provinces, there are no limits on how much a landlord can raise the rent and no requirement that pets be accommodated in our Act, and the process for getting a landlord to comply with minimum housing standards is complicated and time-consuming. Forcing landlords to provide decent housing and to comply with the existing laws has recently become more difficult due to Calgary’s low vacancy rate. This session looks at the rights the Residential Tenancies Act does give tenants for poor housing conditions, unreturned security deposits, rent increases, and other concerns and at how tenants can enforce those rights. This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation. Jonnette Watson Hamilton, Professor of Law, University of Calgary, will be the lecturer. When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.
