In 2013 a partnership project involving Parkinson Alberta, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and Dance at the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary brought together people with Parkinson disease, their spouses, friends or care partners, and professional dancers and an accompanist for weekly dance class. The project grew into a multidisciplinary research study supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Rozsa Foundation. Part of the study asked questions about whether dancing contributes to quality of life. “I Always Look Forward to Tuesdays” is a performance of the research project and the larger story of this community dance project. Performers include program participants (the oldest is 90), the dance teachers, neuroscientist Dr. Afra Faroud, and jazz musician Sheldon Zandboer. Video artist Noel Begin is a collaborator. Admission is free.

Anne Flynn is a professor in Dance at the University of Calgary, with a joint appointment in the Faculties of Arts and Kinesiology. The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.
