On April 23, 2013 in an outlying area of Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Rana Plaza collapsed during the morning rush hour. Over 1,100 people died and over 2500 were injured, many of those left with permanent disabilities. In the aftermath, it became clear that factories housed in the building were producing clothing for many of the best known brands in Europe and North America. This paper looks at how postcolonial art might represent the global inter-connections implicit in the building’s collapse. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! This event is sponsored by the Postcolonial Studies Research Group. The Postcolonial Studies Research Group gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of English and the Faculty of Arts.
Location:
Social Science 1015
Speaker:
Dr. Pamela McCallum, Department of English

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap, the being a force of nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
George Bernard Shaw
