Opportunity Description:

Humanities 101 is a strength-based educational program designed to help low-income Calgarians address barriers getting in the way of exercising their capacities and skills. Teachers and volunteers are co-learners in the classroom and are passionate about learning and create a welcoming space where adults with a diverse range of life and educational experiences challenge themselves and find a passion and excitement for learning. The Humanities 101 Learning Guides join our class twice each week throughout the semester. We begin with lunch each day at noon, followed by a small group study time lead by the Learning Guides from 12:30 to 1:30. The activities for this time are outlined by our instructor, and can include a wide variety of topics including: discussing a reading, helping students identify key concepts, grammar, writing in academic style, reviewing student work, modeling and teaching appropriate classroom etiquette, talking about learning strategies such as note-taking and time management, mentoring students, etc. After this, the class has a lecture or class discussion from 1:30 to 3:30. Volunteers are welcome, but not required, to stay for this time.
