The Faculty of Arts Students’ Association (FASA) is excited to announce an upcoming engagement project to create a sense of pride, community and activism among the city of Calgary. Voices Beyond the Dark looks into human rights with issues far reaching as political rights to environmental activism. All ticket proceeds will support UCalgary’s bursary program for eligible students impacted by the Syrian refugee crisis. There is also an opportunity to donate at the event. All funds raised for the bursary program will be matched by the university up to $100,000. Purchase your tickets About the Play Inspired from a book written by human rights advocate Kerry Kennedy, Voices Beyond the Dark, led esteemed Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman and a stirring Photo Exhibition by Pulitzer Prize-winner Eddie Adams to create a play interpretation. The book is based on interviews and stories of courage gathered over two years by Ms. Kennedy who interviewed an inspiring array of defenders from more than 36 countries and five continents. With 51 compelling stories of triumph over adversity, the book features human rights defenders who are willing to stand up in the face of imminent danger, speak out and make a difference. The defenders come from all parts of the world and face every form of oppression and abuse, but they hold in common a profound capacity to ignite change.
