2015 marks the 35th anniversary since Terry Fox united all of Canada with his Marathon of Hope. To celebrate this milestone, the Terry Fox Foundation has set a goal of raising 35 million dollars in 2015. ’35 million’ doesn’t just represent the 35th anniversary – it represents the amount of money raised if every Canadian gave just $1 – precisely Terry’s goal when he started running 35 years ago. On September 29, 2015 students, faculty, and staff at the University of Calgary will join their peers across Canada and continue to honour Terry’s memory by taking part in Terry’s CAUSE on Campus, to raise money for cancer research. Also participating this year are Carleton University, Centennial College, College of the North Atlantic – Carbonear Campus, Fanshawe College, Marine Institute, McMaster University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, New Brunswick Community College, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Queen’s University, Simon Fraser University, University of Regina, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, and York University. “There is a strong connection between Terry and the community of Canadian post-secondary students,” said Darrell Fox, Terry’s brother and a TFRI senior advisor, who is spearheading the national initiative. “Terry was a university student when he started planning what would become the Marathon of Hope. That students today continue to take up his cause is an honour to his dream of ending cancer.” All funds raised will go to the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute for cancer research. The University of Calgary will be hosting a 5k walk or run which will begin with opening remarks from Dr. Jennifer Chan, a researcher from the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute. There will be a warm up prior to the run, and refreshments for all participants after. Prizes will also be handed out. Registration begins at 11:30am, with the run to start at 12:00pm. The run will take place on the University of Calgary campus, beginning at the MacEwan Student Centre South Courtyard/TFDL Quad. Participants are encouraged to join a team with other students and staff on campus. Those who are unable to walk or run during the event are able to sponsor individuals or groups. Terry’s CAUSE T-Shirts are available for $10 at the event, or can be purchased ahead of time by emailing snbava@ucalgary.ca For more information, visit https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/LocationHome.aspx?eventid=172183〈pref=en-CA&locationID=172191&Referrer=http%3a%2f%2fwww.terryfox.org%2fCauseCampus%2fCampus_registration.html

The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.
