The Latin American Research Centre and the Dept. of History welcome Patricia Harms, Assistant Professor of History and Gender & Women’s Studies at Brandon University. This presentation, titled FAITHFUL RESISTANCE TO HOLY (COLD) WAR: Mennonites and General Ríos Montt (1980-1984), will examine how a small group of residents in Guatemala City negotiated with and navigated through the gruesome period known as la violencia under the rule of General Ríos Montt. Their stories reveal how they chose to interact with a seemingly intractable State apparatus and defy the established binaries that demanded resistance or cooperation with a State system. This event is FREE and OPEN to the public. Refreshments will be served. Info: larc@ucalgary.ca
