The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program (CDWP) presents a special screening of the film Niigaanibatowaad: FrontRunners to kick off the CDWP Writers-in-Residence Reunion Festival. This true story of discrimination against four First Nations boys who served as torch runners during the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, became a catalyst for reconciliation. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with renowned journalist Laura Robinson and Elder Bill Chippeway, one of the original runners. The screenplay for this film was conceived during Robinson’s time as Canadian Writer-in-Residence (2000-2001), and the film is now cited in the Truth and Reconciliation Report.
