To coincide with the opening of the 22nd Conference of the Party (COP22) gathering of world Heads of State and Governments, The Urban Research Network presents: Science in the Pub II – Urban Resilience. The majority of the global population is urban, and extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and intensity. Cities founded under different climatic conditions are ill-equipped to cope with this shift. And so, on top of efforts at all levels of government to decrease consumption of finite energy resources, urban areas must also deal with the current reality of extreme weather. Cities must adapt because the human, environmental, and financial cost of doing nothing is increasing. The discussion will start with a short presentation by Maha Al-Zu’bi on issues surrounding urban resilience in Jordan. This will broaden the scope of the debate beyond the Anglo-European perspective, and provide a background to discuss issues of urban resilience in different contexts, and better understand specificities and commonalities for resilient cities over the world. Our other panelists: Christine Arthurs, director, Resilience and Infrastructure, City of Calgary Dr. Sasha Tsenkova, professor, Faculty of Environmental Design Dr. Caroline Hachem-Vermette, assistant professor, Faculty of Environmental Design Moderator: Natalie Robertson, MEDes candidate and Urban Resilience enthusiast To register: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/turn-science-in-the-pub-ii-urban-resilience-tickets-28474614338?utm_term=eventname_text

To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children, to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived–that is to have succeeded.
