Since 1967, Dr. Stephen Herrero has done research on the behavior of bears and has applied what he and colleagues have found to provide people with knowledge about the details of aggressive behavior in bears. For instance, lots of people like to walk their dogs in bear country, but over half of 93 black bear attacks on people, between 2010 and 2013, involved dogs. Fido is not always your best friend. He has also done major research on the use of bear spray to deter bear attacks. It works. For most people, and in most situations, it works better than firearms. He could go on, and will in his talk. This event is organized by the University of Calgary Emeritus Association and is sponsored by the Vice-President (University Relations). It is open to the community at no charge.

Location:

Senate Room – 7th Floor (room 721) – Hotel Alma

Speaker:

Dr. Stephen Herrero, Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary.

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
