If a one-way trip to Mars seems like a bleak idea, why are so many people keen to sign up? This lively discussion will include three speakers who know about the journey and what it takes to get to Mars: – Simon Engler, robotics engineer and PhD candidate, University of Hawaii – Zac Trolley, a Calgarian short-listed for a one-way trip to Mars – Mark Stevenson, advisory board member on Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Earth Challenge The presentations will lend to somewhat controversial discussions about space travel, the possibility of populating Mars, and the future of humans in space. This speaking engagement falls during Beakerhead – a creative initiative that advances the understanding of science and engineering as part of everyday life – through art and culture. The university is a community sponsor of Beakerhead in 2014.
