The way people organize and protest has been forever changed by the power of social media. A timely example of this is the political unrest in Ukraine. Protestors came together through social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook, leading to a series of events that first erupted in Maidan Square, Kiev. The movement took on a Twitter hashtag of its own and inspired the exhibition #EuromaidanYYC, which is currently on display in the University of Calgary’s Founders’ Gallery at The Military Museums. In conjunction with the exhibition #EuromaidanYYC, the role of social media in political conflict will be examined during a free, public lecture by writer and journalist Ben Makuch at noon at the University of Calgary on November 6. Makuch will speak again that evening at 7:00 p.m. at The Military Museums.
Location:
Gallery Hall – TFDL
