University of Calgary and community agencies host seminar series for displaced oil and gas workers Recent reports estimate 20,000 Calgarians have lost their jobs, despite the fact that they hold critical skills and years of training. In response to this serious economic downturn, Calgary Economic Development is facilitating a series of seminars for those displaced in the oil and gas industry. The University of Calgary is working with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Centre for Suicide Information and Calgary Counselling Centre to organize a seminar on maintaining mental health resiliency during an economic downturn. This seminar is scheduled for Friday, April 15 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Telus Convention Centre, Macleod Hall A. “Many of our alumni, our friends, neighbors and family members have lost their jobs during this economic downturn,” says Debbie Bruckner, senior director of student wellness, access and support. “As integral members of the Calgary community, it is critical that the University of Calgary supports our city and ensure that we take an active role in building strength and resilience.” The title of the seminar is Mental Health Resiliency During an Economic Downturn. The focus will be on the lived experience of the panelists and presenters, and how they have navigated layoffs and stressors during difficult economic challenges. This is the third in the series of presentations and workshops supported and delivered by business and community leaders, for the Calgary Works Re-engage Workshop Series for laid-off professionals and skilled trades workers.
