The LGBTQ Health Forum will provide an opportunity to address some of the gaps in medical education for practising physicians, students, allied health-care providers, and community members. The day will begin with introductory talks discussing LGBTQ health in broad strokes. The plenary speaker, Dr. Carys Massarella, will then give an exciting discussion regarding improving patient care for transgender individuals by introducing clinicians to inclusive language for transgender patients and the foundations of transgender health care and advocacy. Immediately prior to and following a lunch break will provide time for forum attendees to gain focused knowledge from a wide range of workshops delivered by organizations and clinicians working in LGBTQ health from across Canada. Sessions and workshops are open to all audiences; however, many workshops are clinically oriented and geared toward health-care providers and students. The day will conclude with a panel discussion with community members and health professionals that offer attendees personal insight into LGBTQ health-care experiences. Dr. Carys Massarella is an emergency physician at St. Joseph’s Healthcare. She is also the lead physician for the Transgender Care Program at Quest Community Health Centre in St. Catharines. Dr. Massarella is a leading expert in transgender care in Ontario. She teaches at the Degroote School of Medicine. Massarella lectures widely on transgender health care and has done a TEDx talk on The Depathologization of Trans Identity. She recently presented The False Narrative of Deception at TEDx Hamilton, appeared in the CBC documentary Transforming Gender, and was the first transgendered person to be a president of a large teaching hospital medical staff in the world. She was named one of the World’s 50 Transgender Icons by the Huffington Post. Massarella sits on the Gender Advisory Committee for Rainbow Health Ontario and is a member of WPATH.
