It is hard to overstate the importance of energy. We rely on it for everything from advanced medical equipment to heating, cooling and irrigation. It influences our economic, political, military and social policies and the possession or non-possession of sufficient energy resources, however defined, is a key factor in a state’s political and economic power. As such, throughout history, it has often been a source of competition and conflict as the danger of disruption of energy supplies and the political vulnerability that often accompanies energy dependency become threats to international stability and security. This workshop will examine the history behind the relationship between energy and security through six presentations.
