Calgary Religion Seminar – 2014 Series Cult of the Deva-raja: Hinduism during the Khmer Empire The modern nation state of Cambodia has a long and chequered history, marked by periods of grandeur followed by devastation. Notable among these was the period of the Khmer Empire, which flourished from the 9th to the 14th centuries. The empire was marked by grand temples — mostly to Hindu deities — constructed by a succession of kings affiliated with the cult of the devaraja. The nature of the cult, which played a central role in the erection of some of the world’s most extraordinary religious sites, such as Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, is far from clear. This talk will provide an introduction to the devaraja cult during the Khmer Empire, and the range of speculations on its form and nature. Light refreshments will be served
