The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program presents Hello/Goodbye, an event that welcomes poet and fiction writer Ian Williams as the 2014-15 Canadian Writer-in-Residence, and celebrates the completion of Sara Tilley’s residency, through a public reading by both authors at the Arrata Opera Centre (1315 7 St SW) on September 11 at 7:30 p.m. This free public reading will be followed by a reception. We welcome the entire community. For the Facebook event, click here. Ian Williams is the author of three books. His most recent collection, Personals, a jittery, plaintive suite of almost-love poems, was shortlisted for the 2013 Griffin Poetry Prize, the Robert Kroetsch Poetry Book Award, and the ReLit Award. His second book, Not Anyone’s Anything, won the 2011 Danuta Gleed Literary Award for the best first collection of short fiction in Canada. You Know Who You Are, a book of poems obsessed with “you,” was a finalist for the ReLit Prize for poetry. Williams completed his PhD in English at the University of Toronto in 2005 and has worked as an English professor with a specialization in modern and contemporary literature. CBC named Williams one of ten Canadian writers to watch. To book a manuscript consultation with Ian, click here. Sara Tilley’s work bridges writing, theatre, and Pochinko Clown Through Mask technique, with each discipline informing the others. After graduating with a BFA in acting from York University in 2001, Sara founded the feminist theatre company She Said Yes!. Sara has written, co-written, or co-created 11 plays, and has had stories, poems, essays, and interviews published in various literary magazines and anthologies. Skin Room, her first novel (Pedlar Press, 2008), won both the Newfoundland and Labrador Percy Janes First Novel Award and the inaugural Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers. Her second novel, DUKE, will be published in Spring 2015 with Pedlar Press. For more information on Ian Williams, visit his website. For more information on Sara Tilley visit her website.
