Public Works Hosted by the Department of Art, Tim Knowles’ talk will focus on his public practice, looking at a range of works from temporary interventions, happenings and events to permanent works. Knowles will expand on the processes and challenges of working in the public realm, and share insights into the relationship of studio/public practice. The City of Calgary’s WATERSHED+: Dynamic Environment Lab is a public art initiative that immerses artists in the Utilities and Environmental Protection Department for periods of time over the next two years researching, exploring and responding to Calgary’s continuously shifting landscape. The lab sets up a beneficial exchange of perspective between artists and The City and encourages critical thinking and creative responses focused on the subject, ultimately resulting in new works that emotionally connect Calgarians to their watershed. Knowles is one of the artists involved in this initiative, and is exploring the movement of water through Calgary’s watershed – the landscape, river systems, drinking water, storm and wastewater systems. Knowles works across a range of mediums, utilising drawing, photography, video, sculptural interventions and participatory events or actions. The work often exists in multiple forms; as a happening or event, an exhibition, an online project, a publication and even as an idea spread by work of mouth. Much of his work involves collaborations with artists, scientists, other professionals and experts in their fields to develop & realise a project, exploring topics and techniques that are new to him. Knowles’ works are process-oriented and rely on chance and environmental elements. Over the past year and a half, Knowles has been an artist-in-residence at the Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Studies, a world-leading centre for research and education in Aberystwyth, Wales, where he has focused on investigating the water cycle in plants and the landscape at large.
