The Institute for Quantum Science and Technology presents its Annual Public Lecture at 7pm on Wednesday 18 November 2015. This year’s speaker is Seth Lloyd, who is the Nam P. Suh Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Center for Extreme Quantum Information Theory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr Lloyd’s research focus is on the interplay of quantum information with complex systems. In addition to his seminal work on quantum simulation, he wrote a popular book Programming the Universe in which he argues that the universe itself is a quantum computer running a cosmic program. The topic of the talk focuses on time travel, which is common science fiction fare, but less well-known is that time travel has a scientific basis allowed by general relativity and various quantum models. Time travel is intrinsically paradoxical (killing one’s grandparent so you thus never exist), but I show how time travel paradoxes can be resolved by quantum teleportation. As an extra benefit, teleportation provides a strategy for escaping black holes. Dr Lloyd will also describe the results of an experiment in which a photon is sent a few billionths of a second back in time with instructions to kill its former self. The event is free but an advance ticket is required to join. Registration details are at http://iqst.ca/outreach/publiclecture.php The Lecture is followed by a free reception for the speaker and the audience.
