Get ready to read, Calgary! The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the Calgary Public Library are teaming up to celebrate Family Literacy Week. This is a great time to raise awareness about how important reading and learning together is for children and families.

What is Family Literacy Day?

Family Literacy Day is celebrated across Canada every year on January 27. It has been a tradition since 1999 to help families discover fun ways to learn at home.

Fun Activities for Every Day of the Week

The CBE Literacy & Early Learning Teams have put together a week full of themes to help you get started. Here is the schedule:

  • Monday, Jan 26: Monday Funday — Try games like Bingo to kick off the week.
  • Tuesday, Jan 27: Family Literacy Day — The big day! Focus on reading together.
  • Wednesday, Jan 28: Word Play Wednesday — Have fun with new words and vocabulary.
  • Thursday, Jan 29: Thinking Thursday — Try puzzles or "would you rather" questions.
  • Friday, Jan 30: Fun Friday — Explore art and creative activities.
  • Saturday, Jan 31: Scientific Saturday — Do a science experiment with an adult.
  • Sunday, Feb 1: Spend Time Sunday — Enjoy a winter scavenger hunt or free local activities.
  • Monday, Feb 2: Once Upon a Monday — Wrap up the week with digital stories and cultural resources.
