Hidden away in the dark corners and recesses of the University of Calgary are unique collections of artefacts, specimens, and archives. Though known and used within their home departments and institutes, these collections potentially support broader, interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Collections — whether of botanical, zoological, archaeological, archival or artistic materials — are important primary sources that have the ability to provoke deep, experiential learning and foster new, creative connections. Recent projects have involved fine art students drawing animal skeletons; ACAD Ceramics students connecting with historic potters through handling ancient Latin American ceramics; members of the 18C Matters Research Group discussing the fur trade with historical texts from Archives and Special Collections and preserved pelts from the Arctic Institute of North America; MRU Communications students considering visual communication and Afghan War Rugs; and Visual Arts majors researching and writing about a series of contemporary drawings. In this interactive session, representatives from across campus will share the unique collections in their care, discuss how they support creative research and pedagogy, and foster new connections. Speakers Jana Vamosi, Associate Professor, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology & Herbarium Director, Department of Biological Sciences Annie Murray, Associate University Librarian, Archives & Special Collections, Libraries and Cultural Resources Nicola Howard, Curatorial Technician, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology Jessica Madeleine Theodor, Associate Professor, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Department of Biological Sciences Carmen Chinery, Geoscience Technician, Department of Geoscience Michele Hardy, Curator, Nickle Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Resources For more, visit nickle.ucalgary.ca/event-series/nickle-noon.

Growth of the soul is our goal, and there are many ways to encourage that growth, such as through love, nature, healing our wounds, forgiveness, and service. The soul grows well when giving and receiving love. I nourish my soul daily by loving others and being vulnerable to their love. Love is, after all, a verb, an action word, not a noun.
Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.
