Poverty Inc. is an award-winning feature length documentary that critically examines the development industry as it has evolved since the end of the Second World War. We’ve organized a free, on campus viewing and panel discussion so that students and staff have an opportunity to see and discuss this important rethinking about what it means to fight poverty in ways that are effective over the long-term. Too often, charitable intentions can have unintended or outright negative consequences. This event originated as an opportunity for two political science classes, taught by instructor Chris W. J. Roberts, to see a film relevant to both contemporary African politics and the political economy of development. However, we’ve taken this unique opportunity to open the doors and invite the entire university community. If you have an active or even a passing interest in development, this is a must-see documentary that stimulates hard questions and good discussions. More information about the documentary here: http://www.povertyinc.org As a gauge of interest (versus room capacity), we are asking those interested to register at EventBrite There is no cost.
