The Philosophy Speakers Program presents MARK MIGOTTI & NICOLE WYATT (UCalgary), “Yet More Philosophy of Sex” About the Talk The philosophy of sex we aim for here is a philosophy of having sex; an explanatory account of what it is to have sex. Somewhat surprisingly, the very idea of such an undertaking has been attacked from all sides. Alan Soble, for example, argues that the ordinary practice of identifying some sexual acts as ‘having sex’ is simply a mistake. Marilyn Frye also places little importance on having sex, though for quite different reasons—on her surprising analysis having sex turns out to be something only men can do. By contrast with both Soble and Frye, John Finnis takes the important line to be that between marital intercourse, something only possible for married heterosexual couples who approach sexual activity with the right religious attitude, and fornication. Is the concept of having sex simply arbitrary and thus philosophically barren? We defend having sex against this diverse group of critics by offering an account of the concept and showing its philosophical usefulness. About the Speakers Mark Migotti is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary with research interests focusing on 19th Century German Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Classical American Pragmatism, Epistemology, Ethics, and Philosophy of History. He is author of Ethics and the Life of the Mind: Nietzsche’s Critique of Modern Morality (2009) Nicole Wyatt is an Assistant Professor and Department Head of Philosophy at the University of Calgary.
