You’re invited to a talk by Dr. Thierry Giasson, who is currently a professor in the Department of Political Science at the Universitè Laval, Quebec City. Online, all the time: How Digital Platforms are Contributing to Permanent Campaigning In Canada. There are few areas of our social, economic, cultural and political lives that have remained untouched by digital networked technologies. In the last ten years, research on web politics has mostly focused on the transformations that online technologies have imposed on political actors (parties, lobbies, activists, governments, candidates) in the way they engage and communicate with their stakeholders. This presentation explains how, in the understudied inter-election context, Canadian federal parties are using web-based technologies in their permanent campaigning efforts. Using data from in-depth interviews with communication directors and digital strategists of federal parties in Canada, we describe the objectives underpinning the extensive online campaigns they have developed since the 2011 elections. The interviews reveal that Canadian political parties have now fully integrated web technologies as part of their permanent campaign, mainly for resource collection and communication imperatives, but also because these digital networked platforms provide useful collaborative and mobilizing opportunities considered as enhancing on-going campaigning efforts. https://www.grcp.ulaval.ca/thierry-giasson The talk is free and all are welcome to attend.
