Philosophy Speakers ALUMNI SERIES: John Campbell (UC Berkeley), “Some Varieties of Mental Causation”

About the Talk A contrast is often drawn between thinking of physical causation in terms of counterfactual dependence with thinking of it in terms of a process linking cause and effect. My main point in this talk is that we can draw a similar contrast between different ways of thinking of mental causation. The central problem this raises is how to characterize the notion of a ‘mental process’. About the Speaker John Campbell is Willis S. and Marion Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His main interests are in theory of meaning, metaphysics, and philosophy of psychology. He is currently working on the causation in psychology.
