The Calgary John Howard Society, Indigenous Youth Mentoring Program provides a unique mentoring experience by offering one-on-one, group and peer mentoring. Indigenous youth will be matched with a Mentor. Mentors will offer support, advise, and guide youth that are at risk or involved with the justice system. The Mentors will be supported by the Indigenous Cultural Liaison and the Volunteer Program Coordinator. The Mentor will take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship. This includes working alongside mentee weekly with additional communication via telephone, email and social media as needed. Mentors work in partnership with their mentee, plan a mentorship plan which includes goals, action activities, can include exploring opportunities for learning based on the Circle of Courage. Build self-esteem and motivation through planned activities while also providing connection to Elders with the support of the Indigenous Cultural Liaison. Requirements and participation of Mentors; must be over the age of 18; interested in working with young people; a good listener; encouraging and supportive; have knowledge of Indigenous cultures (Blackfoot, Cree, Metis and Inuit); be willing to communicate regularly with the Indigenous Cultural Liaison, submit activity information, and be able to receive constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities. Mentors will attend weekly mentorship group sessions running on Wednesdays from 5-8pm along with be invited to participate in additional traditional ceremonies occurring on the weekends or other scheduled times in the week. Once training is completed, mentors will meet with mentees in the community on an individual basis to provide emotional support, work on goal planning, and engage in positive, pro social activities.
