Opportunity Description:

The Agency The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life. The Program The Community Re-Entry Support Program (CRESP) provides a link to the community for incarcerated individuals through the provision of direct assistance, information, advocacy, guidance and related support. It is aimed towards reducing the negative impact of incarceration by providing appropriate direction and support that will assist individuals during and following their incarceration to minimize social exclusion and increase the likelihood of successful integration. Any individuals who are incarcerated in the Calgary Remand Centre, provincial and/or federal custody facilities and who will be released from custody to the Calgary community may access the services. A continuum of service is established while working with these incarcerated individuals and continued support is provided upon release into the community. Upon entry to the program, we work to connect individuals as quickly as possible to supports and appropriate resources, continuing with case management support and working towards successful reintegration into the community. The Position The Volunteer Support Worker works directly with CRESP to ensure incarcerated individuals have access to resource information, professional and natural supports, and document assistance. Written requests for assistance are given to the Volunteer who will respond with the required information to facilitate the likelihood of success for reintegration. This is an office-oriented position. Responsibilities • Respond to written requests for assistance from individuals at Calgary Remand Centre. • Provide information and resource support. • Work closely with CRESP and other CJHS staff to gain further knowledge of all CJHS programs. • Information gathering and sharing and data collection. Time Commitment • Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for an agreed upon schedule • 3-8 hours each week • A minimum one-year commitment to the program Training • Orientation and initial training • Ongoing training as needed • Opportunity to participate in other CJHS events Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate has been chosen. Please submit your cover letter and resume to: Brianna Macleod – Volunteer Program Coordinator Brianna.macleod@cjhs.ca Please cite “Community Reentry Volunteer” in your subject line. The Calgary John Howard Society thanks all applicants; however, only those considered for an interview will be contacted.
